11:00 - 16:00 | Seminar: Biosecurity and transportation of fishOrganized by Norwegian Food Safety Authority, Sernapesca (Chile) and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute.
Aquacultured fish are transported extensively in Norway and Chile. The wellboat fleet in Norway consists of a number of vessels, which transport every year approximately 320 million smolts and more than 1.3 million tonnes of harvested fish. Smolts are produced at freshwater sites and transferred to marine sites. As they grow, they are often moved to new cages within the same site, and sometimes to new sea-sites. At the end of the production period they are finally transported live to slaughter houses, with the exception of some specialized processing boats that kill the fish on site and transport them in closed tanks to land for evisceration, fileting and sorting. Transport of fish has been recognized as one key disease emergence risk factor in salmon farming. The transport of live aquaculture animals by wellboats is considered to play a significant role in spreading diseases in Norway, particularly between regions. It is commonly believed that the bacterial disease Furunculosis and the viral disease Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) were spread by wellboats in Norway in the late 80s. Also, it has been suggested that the suspected introduction of SAV2 from Scotland, and its further spread in Norway, is due to transport of fish between sea sites. Well boat technology is at a much higher level today than in the beginning of the industry. That has reduced the risk of transmitting diseases, but still transport is a challenge both for fish health and fish welfare. Programme: 11:00 – 12:00 We serve a simple lunch before the seminar starts. 12:00 – 12:30 Status of fish health in Chile, by Regional Director of Aquaculture for Sernapesca in Los Lagos region, Osvaldo Sandoval 12:30 – 13:00 Status of fish health in Norway, by Director Brit Hjeltnes, Norwegian Veterinary Institute 13:00 – 14:00 Development of transport of fish in Norway and Chile. 12:30 - 13:30 | Seminar: Plastic pollution - how can the aquaculture industry contribute to solving the problem?Organized by Bellona.
There is still a lot we don't know about the origin of marine plastic debris, the amount of it abd the consequences. Beach clean-ups have shown that marine industries are an important source of this plastic along the Norwegian coast.. The aquaculture industry is an important activity along the coast and can make valuable contributions through mapping of the plastic pollution caused by its own members, as well as finding good solutions to minimize its own polluting. Bellona invites participants to a seminar where we will give an insight into the status of marine pollution along the Norwegian coast. Grieg Seafood will share its experiences from its plastic project with Bellona and the results of the FHF Project "OCEAN PLASTICS". 09:00 - 11:00 | Breakfast meeting: Tomorrow's food comes from the oceanEverybody is talking about more food from the ocean, but how can we achieve this?
The Institute of Marine Research has studied the possibilities for producing more seafood and other biomass along the long and exciting coastline in Norway. Our main conclusion is that we need to go deeper down into the food chain. This means first and foremost that we need to consider farming seaweed and algae, mussels and other organisms that are filter feeders. In order to succeed, we must overcome a number of challenges. At this breakfast meeting you will get a deeper insight into how we together can develop new, sustainable and profitable solutions. Programme: • How can Norway contribute more food from the sea - research director Karin Kroon Boxaspen • Craving for seaweed? Both fish and people can eat more shells and seaweed - senior scientist Tore Strohmeier • Fish is more than salmon! 11:00 - 12:00 | Seminar: Norwegian kelp industry 2050: Can aquaculture save the world?Organized by Bellona.
Growing kelp and aquatic plants is one of the most sustainable industries we could develop. Environment-friendly raw material and continued value creation along the coast, and with a massive potential to bind CO₂. By 2050 Norway could grow 20 million tonnes per year. Internationally, we see a race to establish the most effective production forms. Norwegian aquaculture knows efficient production in the ocean. The coast is long and well suited for kelp production. The financial muscles are in place. Can aquaculture save the world? Programme: Presentations by SINTEF Ocean (Jorunn Skjermo) and Ocean Forest (Harald Sveier). From 18:00 hrs, Ocean Forest invites participants to a mingling session on board Bellona's sailship "Kallinika", which is moored in the Port of Trondheim.
